FAQs: Contact Lenses
-
I'm interested in trying out contact lenses for the first time, but I'm worried I won't be able to put them in or take them out, and that I might find them uncomfortable?
Putting in and removing contact lenses is 'like learning to ride a bike', a little practice and determination as well as a patient and experienced teacher go a long way.
Most patients grasp it in one sitting, a few need to return for a second session. But, don't worry, we won't let you take them home to trial until you demonstrate to us that you can safely put them in and remove them yourself.
Once you get the hang of it, contact lenses are incredibly comfortable to wear and within a few moments the feeling of something being in your eye quickly disappears.

I've recently had my eyes tested for new glasses, will contact lenses be the same prescription?
The prescription for glasses and contact lenses isn't the same, therefore a separate contact lens fitting appointment is required, although this can be incorporated into the routine eye test appointment if required.
Contact lenses sit directly on the eye whereas glasses tend to be be worn 10-12mm away from the eye.
Generally you should allow up to 2 weeks from time of lens fitting to complete the process and familiarize yourself with contact lenses.

And, free consultations! Whether that be routine or unscheduled.

I have dry eyes. Can I wear contact lenses?

-
I have astigmatism. Can I wear contact lenses?
Yes. There are specific contact lenses for those with astigmatism which are available to buy as daily disposables or monthly disposables. Nowadays, modern contact lens manufacturing processes mean they are just as comfortable as non astigmatic contact lenses.

I wear photochromic spectacle lenses (that darken in the sun) because I am light sensitive. How can contact lenses replace these?
Transitional (photochromic) to weekly disposable contact lenses were introduced just before the pandemic and are commercially available. They reduce the amount of light and glare entering the eye in sunny conditions and are perfectly safe to wear daytime and night time, like you would with regular contact lenses.
-
I love the freedom that my contact lenses give me, will I always be able to wear contact lenses even into old age?
Yes, age does not preclude you from wearing contact lenses. So, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to wear them into old age. Eyes tend to feel a little drier as we age but new contact lens materials provide plenty of moisture.
